Daily Grind: Best Lip Colors for Work

sunlight (20)

I was planning to do my summer picks for lips and nails first, but as some of you may know, I just got a new job! Since I’m still in my first few weeks at the new office, I thought it’d be more relevant to share my work-appropriate lip picks instead.

For those of you that have a more casual dress code or otherwise not-customer-facing position, you can probably get away with rocking the brightest bright colors. Since my new position is patient-facing (I’m in health administration “in real life”), I’m expected to be a bit more toned-down with my looks. I absolutely love playing with makeup, and I really wanted some fun options that were appropriate for work without the soul-sucking repetition of a sheer lipstick like Chanel Boy every day (don’t get me wrong, it’s a great product, it’s just not enough personality for me). So here are my top 12 lip picks for the “conservative business casual” office.

These are of course just shade suggestions and specific products that work for me. If the colors I’ve listed aren’t quite right for you, consider checking out other shades from the same product line to find what suits you best in a formula I can vouch for.

All of the products mentioned in this post are cruelty-free. Except for NARS Audacious lipstick in Anna, all other products mentioned in this post are vegan.

Kat Von D Everlasting liquid lipstick (Sephora, $20.00/0.22oz) – Easily my favorite formula of the “mainstream” liquid lipstick lot, the price is great for the amount of product you get too. I love the sleek packaging, and these opaque mattes are comfortable to wear for long periods of time without any cracking or crumbling. I think I own eight of these now, but these are my top three for the daytime professional:

Jeffree / Mother / Lovesick

Lovesick – One of my current favorites overall, this pale mauve-nude is just cool enough to mesh perfectly with my undertones. I love to pair it with pastel pinks and purples like Makeup Geek’s Cupcake and Unexpected, but it’s close enough to my natural lip shade that I think it could work with almost any daytime eye look. A slightly elevated MLBB (my lips but better), there are a few more of those in this list.

Tag: Lip Product Addict

I have never done a tag post before, but lip products are some of my fave so I figured I’d have a little fun! I found this one deep in the archives of FleurdeForce’s channel so I assume it made the rounds quite a while ago, but I still plan on tagging a few bloggers who I am positive haven’t done this.

I tag: my sister who writes Owl in London (even though she’s not in LDN anymore), Judy from GainsBeforeGrains, Steph over at SquatRackShenanigans, and RebeccaShoresMUA! Anybody is welcome to participate, just tag me and let me know so I can see what your favorites are too.

1. Favourite balm/treatment?

Bite Beauty’s Agave Lip Mask is the best of the best! I use it before bed and after exfoliating my lips to keep them soft and moisturized.

2. Best eye-catching red?

Stila’s Stay All Day liquid lipstick in Beso or MAC Retro Matte in Feels So GrandI definitely think a liquid to matte formula is the way to go with such a statement lip to keep it looking sharp all day (or night).

That said, to be completely honest, I actually reach for bright pinks way more often than red! My favorites include Kiss of Fire from Dose of Colors, Jeffree Star’s Prom Night, and Dragonfruit from Bite Beauty’s new Amuse Bouche line.

Trending Products Worth the Hype

With the semi-annual Sephora sale coming up later this week (details below), I thought now might be a good time to share some of the super-hyped products on the market that I think are absolutely worth the attention they’ve garnered.

Historically, the semi-annual Sephora sales have taken place in April and November. So far, that seems to be true of this year too as the spring Love Note sale starts tomorrow! The following sale information is copied from Temptalia:

VIB Rouge: 7-13 April — 15% off with code ROUGENOTE
VIB: 8-13 April — 15% off with code VIBNOTE
BI: 9-12 April — 10% off with code BINOTE

If you’re shopping online, don’t forget to use Ebates for even more cash back.

Now on to the good stuff! Trending products worth the hype.

CaptureSunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil ($105.00/1oz) – My current skincare obsession, this stuff is absolutely everywhere on YouTube lately (especially if you watch any gorgeous ladies in the UK). A retinol compound suspended in oil, Luna is a nighttime facial treatment designed to exfoliate, repair damage and redness, and leaves my skin feeling soft and full. Since I already have dry skin and retinol can be a bit drying if you’re new to the product, I like to mix the Luna oil with a few drops of my regular facial oil before applying. Using once/week, I expect the full size bottle will last me about a year.

I just want to note that it doesn’t have the highest rating on Paula’s Choice, from a scientific standpoint, primarily due to added fragrance. I’m generally not a fan of this, but in the case of Sunday Riley’s Luna it doesn’t seem to irritate my skin at all (which has become increasingly rare as I get older). Still, please patch test before applying to your face.

Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primer ($37/1.0oz) – I’ll be honest, I’ve only tried one of these so far, but when the Step 1 line of primers first launched, it was all anyone could talk about for what seemed like months. I’ve got the hydrating version, but there are nine others, and they are still flying off the shelves. Before trying this, I wasn’t sure anything could beat the Too Faced Hangover Rx primer, but MUFE is miles ahead. The texture of the formula is somewhere between a serum and a lotion which my dehydrated skin loves, plus it sets quickly and leaves a solid base to help prolong the wear of my makeup. With some added silicones, my skin feels perfectly smooth for makeup application, and there’s definitely a bit of pore-blurring as well.

Spring Favorites: Nails & Lips

IMG_0033

Now that spring is officially here (even though it doesn’t entirely feel like it yet), I am so ready for bright colors, pastels, and pedicures. In lieu of a monthly favorites, I thought I’d take the bright and sunny opportunity to share my favorite lip and nail colors for spring, and how to pair them together!

Ciaté Mini Paint Pot nail polish in Pool Party ($9.00/0.17oz) – I’m a little obsessed with this brand at the moment, and this deep, bright azure blue knocks it out of the park. The formula is smooth with the perfect viscosity to apply streak-free and the shape of the brush (almost like an arrow) makes it practically fool-proof for clumsy people like me to paint our own nails. I also love the mini size of these bottles as it means I actually have a chance of finishing it all before the polish begins to separate!

Top Five: February Favorites

It’s been quite a while since I posted a Top Five Favorites list, but I’ve acquired a lot of goodies over the last few months and a few of them have completely stolen my contoured heart. Here are my top five favorites for the month of February!

Sugarpill CosmeticsPoison Plum eyeshadow ($12/0.12oz) – This was my first ever purchase from Sugarpill and now I want to try damn near everything! The single eyeshadow is massive (3x the size of a MAC Pro pan), and one of the best purples I have ever had the extreme pleasure of working with. It’s a gorgeous deep matte shade with a bit of hidden sparkle to it and has become a major player in my go-to look lately.
