I’m not really one for New Year’s resolutions, but I do like to try new things – even if it’s actually an old thing. I decided to start off this year with a lipstick challenge – 31 days of lipstick with no repeats, forcing me to “shop my stash” and evaluate what I already own. When you wear makeup pretty much every day, especially if you’re wearing it in a professional environment with… more conservative views on makeup than you’d prefer, it’s pretty easy to get stuck in a rut with the same quick and easy looks. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I love lipstick and I own a lot of them so I wanted to challenge myself to play with my existing collection a bit more.
I don’t actually wear makeup every single day, especially if I’m not at work or going out, so it took me a little bit longer than the original January plan of 31 consecutive days, but I did it and I’m so pleased with this little project.
Unfortunately, I am a bad blogger and didn’t take a photo of myself every single day, but I did keep a list of everything I wore. Here’s my 31 days of lipstick, with product photos for any day that I didn’t actually snap a picture of my face.
The first number is the lipstick and the second number is the date of the month. The first product listed is lip liner and the second item is the lipstick. If only one item is listed, I didn’t wear lip liner that day. I did allow myself to repeat lip liner usage, mostly because I don’t own that many and don’t think it’s necessary.
Now that summer is out in full force here in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve had a little time to whip out the ultimate bright lip colors. While the day-glo pinks and purples may seem the obvious choice, I’ve always been a bit of a sucker for the perfect orange lip and I’ve got five to share for the second installment of my Lipstick Arsenal: orange and coral!
Dose of Colors liquid lipstick in Coral Crush – A sleeper in my collection, I forget just how perfect this shade is and then fall in love with it all over again every time I put it on. It’s the perfect level of brightness that I think could match just about any skin tone and not look out of place. You’ve heard me wax poetic about this formula a hundred times before, so I’m just going to leave it there and say it checks all my boxes.
There was not meant to be such a long gap between posts, my sincerest apologies! If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen that The Boyfriend and I recently found our dream home and have been in the process of acquiring said house and selling our current home. Home owner life is no joke! Now that I’ve littered this post with excuses, let’s move on.
A while back someone asked me to swatch my entire lipstick arsenal, and that’s just… a task I’m not sure I’m ready for yet. That said, there are some clear winners in every color category and I thought that sharing those would be a lovely compromise. No one really needs to see my stuff that’s just okay, right? So let’s start off with the basics: the pinks, nudes, pinky nudes, and nude-y pinks! Here are my top five for spring/summer 2017.
Lime Crime Matte Velvetine liquid lipstick in Marshmallow(limecrime.com, $20.00/0.88oz) – This isn’t the first time Lime Crime has made it into a favorites list of mine, I absolutely love the long-lasting ultra-liquid formula of their Velvetine liquid lipsticks. This slightly-pink nude shade is perfect for every day, and it’s one of the few that stays in my rotation all year long.
The Boyfriend requested a “bright surprise” for a recent date night and I delivered. I loved the balance of super bright eyes with pretty neutral lips (which is a favorite move for nights out so I can still eat whatever I want). This is not a tutorial, but I often get asked about which products I’m using so I thought I’d share a full product list for one of my go-to styles. These photos have not been edited in any way.
A few weeks ago, I put up a full postall about Lime Crime’s Velvetine liquid lipsticks, one of my favorite formulas. That post was so long that I figured I’d split my Brand Highlight into two and share my thoughts on their Perlees and Superfoils separately. If you’re a fan of glitter, glow, and/or metal, these might just be for you.
I ordered these online and when they first arrived my immediate thought was “oh hell I’m never going to wear these.” I am pleased to say I was so very wrong. These metallic bullet-style lipsticks are creamy, comfortable to wear, and look like foiled metal on the lips. They’re not the most long lasting, but survived my sushi and are very easy to reapply so I’m not too bothered by it.
Denim – The perfect denim blue to kick off anyone’s “unusual” lipstick shade collection.
Opaque, creamy, it ticks all the boxes for a good bullet lipstick and then it’s metallic blue too.
What more could you want?
