Now that summer is out in full force here in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve had a little time to whip out the ultimate bright lip colors. While the day-glo pinks and purples may seem the obvious choice, I’ve always been a bit of a sucker for the perfect orange lip and I’ve got five to share for the second installment of my Lipstick Arsenal: orange and coral!
Dose of Colors liquid lipstick in Coral Crush – A sleeper in my collection, I forget just how perfect this shade is and then fall in love with it all over again every time I put it on. It’s the perfect level of brightness that I think could match just about any skin tone and not look out of place. You’ve heard me wax poetic about this formula a hundred times before, so I’m just going to leave it there and say it checks all my boxes.
There was not meant to be such a long gap between posts, my sincerest apologies! If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen that The Boyfriend and I recently found our dream home and have been in the process of acquiring said house and selling our current home. Home owner life is no joke! Now that I’ve littered this post with excuses, let’s move on.
A while back someone asked me to swatch my entire lipstick arsenal, and that’s just… a task I’m not sure I’m ready for yet. That said, there are some clear winners in every color category and I thought that sharing those would be a lovely compromise. No one really needs to see my stuff that’s just okay, right? So let’s start off with the basics: the pinks, nudes, pinky nudes, and nude-y pinks! Here are my top five for spring/summer 2017.
Lime Crime Matte Velvetine liquid lipstick in Marshmallow(limecrime.com, $20.00/0.88oz) – This isn’t the first time Lime Crime has made it into a favorites list of mine, I absolutely love the long-lasting ultra-liquid formula of their Velvetine liquid lipsticks. This slightly-pink nude shade is perfect for every day, and it’s one of the few that stays in my rotation all year long.
The Boyfriend requested a “bright surprise” for a recent date night and I delivered. I loved the balance of super bright eyes with pretty neutral lips (which is a favorite move for nights out so I can still eat whatever I want). This is not a tutorial, but I often get asked about which products I’m using so I thought I’d share a full product list for one of my go-to styles. These photos have not been edited in any way.
A few weeks ago, I put up a full postall about Lime Crime’s Velvetine liquid lipsticks, one of my favorite formulas. That post was so long that I figured I’d split my Brand Highlight into two and share my thoughts on their Perlees and Superfoils separately. If you’re a fan of glitter, glow, and/or metal, these might just be for you.
I ordered these online and when they first arrived my immediate thought was “oh hell I’m never going to wear these.” I am pleased to say I was so very wrong. These metallic bullet-style lipsticks are creamy, comfortable to wear, and look like foiled metal on the lips. They’re not the most long lasting, but survived my sushi and are very easy to reapply so I’m not too bothered by it.
Denim – The perfect denim blue to kick off anyone’s “unusual” lipstick shade collection.
Opaque, creamy, it ticks all the boxes for a good bullet lipstick and then it’s metallic blue too.
What more could you want?
I’m not going to get into any of the drama or controversy surrounding Doe Deere and Lime Crime. It’s been written to death all over the Internet. Today, I’m just here to talk makeup. I tried a few Lime Crime products on a whim a little while back and have been so impressed with the cruelty-free brand (all their products are made in the USA too!) For the sake of brevity, I’ve decided to split my Brand Highlight into two posts, so here’s a little run down of the Velvetines I own along with my thoughts on the formula and shades. A second post is not far behind with reviews of the brand’s Perlees metallic lipsticks and Superfoils eyeshadows.
(I will make one comment in that, if you do choose to support the brand, I recommend using PayPal when you check out and not provide your credit card information directly to the website in order to protect yourself in the event of a highly unlikely, but not impossible, second security breach).
I have amassed quite a few of these over the last year and while I’m not sure it’s my favorite liquid lipstick of all time, it’s definitely in my top three. These go on smooth – more liquid than most other formulas, and they don’t dry down too quickly which means you’ve got some time to adjust as needed. They easily last 8+ hours depending on your eating habits (sometimes a little less depending on my lunch choice). The shades are super pigmented and most are incredibly opaque as well. Some of the darker shades can be a touch patchy, but with the additional work time from the fluid formula, it’s easy to layer and smooth out.
