So I went into this expecting to come up with my top 10, or rather bottom 10 beauty products of the summer, but rather than fueling the drama and sensationalism of being angry about stuff, I decided to just stick with eight. These are the products that really stood out in my mind as not good or not enjoyable and I didn’t want to start throwing in random products that are “just okay” for the sake of having 10. Sorry to anyone that has a thing for multiples of five like I do, that itch will not be scratched here. Top 15 Summer Hitlist to follow!
This is super cheesy and I didn’t really feel like I could share it with anyone directly, so it’s going here… I guess that’s what blogs are for. It’s about makeup.
Growing up, I was never particularly skinny or fat or pretty or ugly, I got picked on a lot for… I don’t really know. Being too average in the looks department I guess. I certainly wasn’t one of “those girls”. You know what I mean, flawless in the sixth grade with tan legs and perfect skin and eventually perfect makeup too, seemingly without a care in the world. I spent my whole life being jealous of girls like that, be it in magazines or in the hallways, in my yearbooks and in movies. I was never going to look like one of them – effortlessly flawless, clear skin glowing with confidence, and definitely looking like they have their shit together. That just isn’t me. Or at least, it wasn’t.
I’ll have to get into the full story at a later date, but long story short: if you love makeup and wear glasses, share your pics on any social media platform and tag them with #FOUREYEDMUA. You can also follow the @FourEyedMUA account on Twitter (that’s me). Let’s work together to build a better community for makeup-loving bespectacled beauties!
I posted my first “spring makeup look” of the season earlier today and had several people ask me for a blog post, and I suppose I should give the people what they want! So here’s a little run down of today’s look and my current spring favorites.
There are a few basic items that are on every “essentials” list I will ever put together as they are my “HG” (Holy Grail) products: Too Faced Hangover RX primer, MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot, MAC Pro Longwear concealer, and tinted brow gel – right now I’m using Benefit Gimme Brow in medium/deep. You can see these as well as the rest of my face prep routine here.
Now that the sun is shining and a fresh face feels a little nicer, I’ve switched up a few steps in my routine for a lighter, more natural look.
I love watching YouTube stars share their favorites every month, but some of those videos and lists are just sooo long. Since I’m doing the whole beauty blogger thing now, I decided I’d share my favorites too – but I’ll be keeping these lists to just my top five, not every item that made its way onto my face last month. So here it is, my Top Five February Favorites:
Tarte Tartelette Amazonian Clay matte palette ($44) – I picked up this gorgeous all-matte palette recently and I just can’t get enough right now. The colors are buttery and pigmented, they blend beautifully, and they all pair well together lending to cool neutral looks with a touch of drama from deep purple Bombshell and pure black Fashionista. I’ve reached for this practically every day and even The Boyfriend loves the purple smokey eyes I’ve been rocking lately.
There are a lot of steps and a lot of products that go into a complete makeup look – from cleansers and moisturizers to primers and setters. Here’s my current routine for getting dolled up and then taking it all off:
Facial Cleanser: Lush Angels on Bare Skin
I use this to wash my face in the shower either before getting ready or at the end of the day if I wasn’t wearing makeup. It’s a great cleanser for all skin types and is both soothing and slightly exfoliating. If I’m in need of some extra scrubs, I will reach for Lush’s Dark Angels exfoliating cleanser, use no more than once/week. Note: Due to the freshness of ingredients, I always buy the smallest size available for Lush products to decrease the chances of it expiring before I can finish it.
Acne Spot Treatment: Clinique Acne Solutions Clinical Clearing Gel
I use this salicylic acid treatment to help clear up any rogue acne on my neck and chin. For some serious info about all things skincare, check out /r/SkincareAddiction on Reddit.
Moisturizer: The Body Shop Seaweed Mattifying Day Cream
I’m almost done my second full-size of jar of this stuff, I love it so much. It’s not always enough to moisturize my driest bits in the dead of winter, but it’s nevertheless a great product and I reach for it year round to help keep my skin hydrated without looking greasy.
Face Primer: Too Faced Hangover RX primer
Primer is a must for me for smoother skin, oil control, and added insurance to keep my makeup in place all day. I am absolutely in love with this silicone-free formula and the coconut water feels great on my skin. I dispense one full pump on the back of my hand and apply with the RealTechniques stippling brush. (You are totally free to apply primer with your fingers, but I try to touch my face as little as possible since I’m so prone to that dreaded oily t-zone).
