101: A Place in the Sun

This one’s been in the making for a very long time, but I really wanted to make sure I understood what I was talking about before I shared it with you. I’m talking about sun protection, for both face and body, and there is way more to it than just SPF. You can find sun protection in creams, sprays, oils, and even cosmetics these days, but not all sunscreens are created equal. I’ve spent so much time researching this topic and I’m finally ready to let you guys know what’s good (and what’s not) to help protect your body’s largest organ.

Skin cancer now affects one in five people, including my grandfather, my neighbor, and probably someone you know too. Anyone can get it, no matter how fair or deep your skin may be. That’s not to say certain people aren’t particularly susceptible, and I’ll talk more about who needs to be especially careful further on in the post. It’s painful, it’s deadly, and it looks pretty nasty too. Just take the two minutes/day and protect yourself – especially if you live in an area where the sun’s always out or it’s extra strong (Oregon and New Zealand come to mind).

Let’s start with some basic terminology, so you can identify what’s happening in your products and if they’re the right choice for you. I’m not a science teacher, so I’ll keep the explanations to a minimum, but I’ve linked all my sources below if you want to read further.

There are two types of radiation from the sun – UVA and UVB. UVA rays are less intense than UVB, but they actually penetrate the skin more deeply which leads to aging, wrinkles, and sun spots. From skincancer.org: “UVA is the dominant tanning ray, and we now know that tanning, whether outdoors or in a salon, causes cumulative damage over time. A tan results from injury to the skin’s DNA; the skin darkens in an imperfect attempt to prevent further DNA damage. These imperfections, or mutations, can lead to skin cancer.” UVB is less prevalent than UVA, but much stronger, and this is what leads to redness and sunburn as it damages the skin’s outermost layer (epidermis). Too much exposure to UVA or UVB can contribute to the growth and development of skin cancer. Ideally you’d use a product that protects against both – these are usually labeled as broad spectrum. You can also refer to the UV Index to help you make the best decisions for your daily sun protection.

Spring Haul: Sephora Sale & ColourPop

I haven’t really shared a haul post here before, it’s not something I do too often anyway, but with the spring Sephora sale just passed, I’ve done quite a bit of shopping over the last month or two and decided to share. This is a bit of a mix between general overview, products I love, and a few first impressions from a collective haul featuring Sephora, ColourPop, Glossier, and vegan indie brand Blackbird Cosmetics. Unfortunately, not everything arrived in time for this post, so I’ll share more details on my Instagram and Snapchat once they do and maybe do a second haul post if that’s something you guys want to see (let me know in the comments).

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil ($105.00/1oz) – My goodness this stuff gets a lot of real estate here lately! I got to try a deluxe sample of this sorcery back in December and finally went crazy enough to splurge on the full size bottle (which should last me at least the rest of this year). I have talked this stuff to death in both my skincare routine and my recent products worth the hype post, so I’ll just say that I really enjoy using this product and definitely think it makes a difference in my complexion. The packaging is ultra luxe, and the oil leaves my skin looking and feeling smooth, soft, and full.

Drunk Elephant “All Glowy” Set ($90.00/1.54oz total) – I’ve had my eye on the Drunk Elephant TLC Framboos Glycolic Night Serum since reading rave reviews about it on Paula’s Choice and I just had to try it. In fact, almost all of the Drunk Elephant products have amazing reviews (from a scientific/chemical standpoint) so I took the opportunity to try three for the price of one. This set includes a full size, one ounce pump bottle of TLC (a glycolic acid serum that helps promote skin renewal and collagen production) as well as two quarter-ounce (0.27oz) minis of their Virgin Marula Oil and C-Firma Day Serum ($72 and $80, respectively). I’ve still only tried the TLC serum so far, but I love the gel-like texture and a little goes a long way. As always, Drunk Elephant products are fragrance free which is a huge bonus for anyone with sensitive or acne-prone skin. I know it’s not just me having a field day with this stuff, because my mom ordered two bottles as well.

Summer Hitlist

Soo it’s been a little while since my last post, not including my Summer Shitlist which just went live, and in that time I’ve: gotten a job, dyed my hair (twice), destashed a ton of makeup, picked up twice as much as I got rid of, and left said job. To make up for the extended radio silence, I’m ditching my Top 5 Favorites limit and going for a Top 15 to cover all my summer beauty hits.

Summer Shitlist

So I went into this expecting to come up with my top 10, or rather bottom 10 beauty products of the summer, but rather than fueling the drama and sensationalism of being angry about stuff, I decided to just stick with eight. These are the products that really stood out in my mind as not good or not enjoyable and I didn’t want to start throwing in random products that are “just okay” for the sake of having 10.
